Division
of
Child
Support
Enforcement
The
Department of Social Services' Division of
Child Support
Enforcement
(DCSE) is
committed to ensuring that every child in
Virginia receives the child support to which he or she is
entitled. DCSE has the authority through law enacted by
Congress and the Virginia General Assembly to establish and
enforce support for
all children.
What services are available to you?
-
Locating a non-custodial parent,
-
Legally establishing the father of a child (paternity),
-
Establishing a support order,
-
Enforcing a work order,
-
Working with other states when either parent does not live in
Virginia.
Who may apply?
You may apply for child support if:
If you currently receive Temporary Assistance for Needy Families
(TANF) or Medicaid for children in your custody, you do not have
to complete an application. The local department of social
services refers your information directly, and a case is
automatically opened for you.
Locating the Non-custodial Parent
Before establishing paternity or a child support order, DCSE
must contact the non-custodial parent. By law, the
non-custodial parents must be given notice of the legal action
being taken to collect child support from them, and they must be
given time to appeal the action, if they disagree.
DCSE's ability to contact the non-custodial parent depends upon
your full cooperation. It is very important for you to
make every effort to find the non-custodial parent yourself, or to
help by providing any information needed.
