Benefits Programs

Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF)

Virginia's Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) replaced the AFDC (Aid to Families with Dependent Children) program.  TANF is a block grant program that gives states considerable flexibility in designing and administering assistance programs.  The TANF program was designed to dramatically reform the nation's welfare system by moving recipients into work, developing the personal responsibility of recipients, and turning welfare into a program of temporary assistance.

Eligible families, adults and children, receive a monthly cash payment to meet their basic needs.  To be eligible, a family must be financially needy and must meet certain requirements.

If you receive TANF, you may be required to participate in the Virginia Initiative for Employment not Welfare (VIEW), or you may volunteer to participate in VIEW.  Failure to satisfactorily participate will result in ineligibility of everyone in your household.

Your responsibilities as a VIEW participant are as follows:

bullet

Sign an Agreement of Personal Responsibility if you receive TANF.  If you do not sign the Agreement of Personal Responsibility your TANF case will be closed;

bullet

Satisfactorily participate in all VIEW activities;

bullet

Keep all appointments;

bullet

Look for a job and accept a bonafide job;

bullet

Report changes to your VIEW worker.

bullet

Ask questions if you don't understand the rules.

How to apply for TANF:
You may get an Application for Benefits form at the local department of social services office.  If you go to the social services office, you may fill out the form there and turn it in before leaving, or you may take it with you and mail or take it back later.  If you prefer, you can call the social services office and ask them to send you an application form.  You must then mail or take it back to the social services office.  An interview is required to go over the information to complete the application process.

The Code of Virginia, Title 63.1, requires that the TANF program be administered in accordance with federal and state statutes and regulations and with policies established by the Stated Board of Social Services.
